The reformulated construction renders this lens notably lighter and smaller than previous versions, and a redeveloped optical layout is better suited for accurate color rendering with digital cameras. Two aspherical elements are featured, too, which help to reduce spherical aberrations and distortions for improved clarity and sharpness throughout the aperture Range. The lens is defined by its bright f/1.2 maximum aperture, which benefits working with Selective focus techniques, and also aids working in low-light conditions. Additionally, a 12-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality and the lens's manual focus operation permits working with subjects as close as 1.6' away.

Version III of this bright wide-angle prime has an updated optical design that renders more accurate colors to suit digital capture, and the physical design is also noticeably lighter and more compact than previous versions.
